Hello all, I recently bought a 1995 7.3 with a bad engine. It sat for about a year, swapped the engine with one from the junk yard. It idled okay but when I drive it, it wouldn’t go over 30 when I had the pedal to the floor and it would barley get up that high. I took the fuel filter out and it was complete junk, had a bunch of **** in it. I replaced it and it ran a little better and now goes up to about 50 mph in 4th gear throttle to the floor, I wasn’t sure what direction to start going next. Any help would really be appreciated, thank you.
I pulled the filter out last night and it was clean, didn’t have anything in it. The diesel itself was a little cloudy but that’s about it, if I put a gauge on it what should the gauge read while running and driving? I will check the tank pickup, thank you
Okay I will take a look at the EBPV, the fuel system was all new in the old engine the reason it was so ****ty in the new engine is because it was from a junk yard and jus sitting. So I’m not sure if they would be bad because they Stayed with the truck. The filter and those components came with the engine from the junk yard. I got it up to 75 after a long stretch and I know 7.3’s are slow but I did a 0 to 60 and it took 40 seconds. Does that sound right? It seems like I have good throttle and power from 1st to 3rd gear but after that it takes forever to really go. And after I drove it for 10-15 minutes it started pouring out whitish gray smoke. It smells like bad exhaust. Not diesel or sweet like antifreeze just bad. The old engine had a bad head gasket and burnt up the top of the pistons, do you think it’s just burning out all the stuff from that? Thank you guys
What could be causing the white smoke? It’s just pouring out and gets a tiny bit better as you drive but as soon as you let it idle it really comes.
That could be oil leaking in your turbo and it burns as it comes thru the turbine. Kinda like shooting oil in your in the tailpipe of your buddies gasser and watch it bellow smoke as he takes off
To find out, pull your down pipe off and stick your phone in there on video and if you can see any oil then that’s your problem!
I suppose since you’ve just swapped the engine the DP won’t be too stuck but a good amount of PB Blaster sure won’t hurt!
@Ford Firefighter ok I will try it! This makes sense because just As the white smoke started blowing out I got a pretty good oil leak and I’m 95% sure it’s coming from the turbo so maybe if I throw the old one in all of that will go away. Thank you!
Yeah no problem!
make sure you get new o rings, they say they never hold once it’s been sealed and used again..
The searching on this forum is very wacky! The way you do it is open the search bar, type your search (white smoke while idle 7.3) and then select the “google” in the drop down bar and then search! It’s confusing to explain it but once you get it you can search more accurately!
@Ford Firefighter yes it took me a while but I finally got it out and will definitely get new o rings. Okay sweet! That will really help me with all my other vehicles to I will be using it a lot haha thank you.
Was this junkyard engine inspected prior to install?
40 seconds 0-60mph is absurd. Cat could be plugged if still there. EBPV shut. Muffler stopped up. I would disconnect exhaust at downpipe under the cab and test drive.
Also check fuel pressure as noted, work with one tank and keep at least 1/3 tank of fuel in there.
