'93 F-150 351 needs more power
Hi,
I recently purchased a 93 F-150 XLT 4x4 SC from my dad. (He just got a loaded 2000 F-250SC PSD)My truck has a 351 with an E4OD behind it and has 154,000 miles on it. My question is how can I get more power from it? Exhaust? Ignition? Headers? Which product would show the most improvement? And who should I purchase it from? Also does anyone else have suggestions?
Thanks for any suggestions!

I have the same combo on a 90 F150, and I have been putting on some upgrades as I can afford it! In order I put it on: B&M Shift Plus electronic tranny controller; MSD ignition w/Bosch +4 plugs and 8.5 mm wires; Flowmaster 60 series muffler w/3" tailpipe (Istill need to replace the cat w/a 3" one); electric fan (replaced direct drive fan). Probably the biggest difference was the exhaust, but that may have been helped by the ignition. The ignition/new plugs combo was a noticable (sp?) difference, but that may have just been the new plugs, although it does still idle smoother and run a little stronger. The B&M switch gives a little firmer shifts, but no "performance" improvement. The electric fan seems to have freed up a little power, but I can't really tell until I'm up around 2500 rpm's. If nothing else, it gets rid of the loud fan blowing sound, until the electric one turns on, that is
. Also, a good throttle body cleaning, new air, PCV & fuel filters help immensely. All together, it runs tons better, and has great pickup & go. I don't tow with it, so I can't tell you anything there. The last thing I am wanting to do in the forseeable future is the K&N FIPK setup, but that may be a couple weeks away.
Hope this gives you some ideas!

I was thinking that an exhaust would make a big difference as the stock unit is very restrictive. I'm thinking that I will start there and as funds become avaliable I'll do more. (I have a snowmobile that needs some "jucing" done to it also so It and the truck will need to share my wallet.) Thank you for the suggestions.

I have the exact same set up (minus 4wd). I just put a Gibson cat-back exhaust (3" in, dual 2.5" out) and the K&N Filtercharge kit on my truck. I have noticed a power increase. These were very easy to install. The only trouble was getting the old rusty exhaust off. These two bolt-on accessories definitely help. Good Luck.

I am very pleased with the sound. It gave the truck a deep mellow voice. It sounds real good. I ordered the system from CarParts.com, it costs $390. If you have any automotive magazines laying around, search for a full page bright green add from CarParts.com. At the bottom of the page is a coupon code to type in on the website that saves you 1/3 on you first order with them. So I saved $100 on the exhaust (once your order goes over $300; $100 is all you save). So I only paid $290 plus S&H. Good Luck.

I have one of those coupons, but when I went to the site I only found a $500 Borla system. How did you find the Gibson? Thanks.

It looks like the difference is between 2WD and 4WD. My truck is only a 2WD. I am not familiar with the 4WD trucks. I don't know why Gibson wouldn't offer cat-back systems for these trucks. You might want to put in the 2WD version of your truck on the website. That should get you to the list of Gibson's. The kit I purchased was the Aluminized Dual Sport Truck (sku# 9801). It is a side exit, dual exhaust that looks much like the factory. You could also call their 1-800 number, they could probably answer these questions better. They list a phone number on their website. Let me know if you have any other questions.
