Hey guys,
Never posted here but this where I go for all my info. I am not a diesel mechanic by no means, but I’m handy with most things. I have a 2003 7.3 since 2005. I have a hydra chip, 4” exhaust, installed a gauge(7) for most anything you would want to monitor. My 7.3 started running rough about a week ago so I ran Forscan to pull codes, I got #7 injector low circuit, so i checked all the wiring up top and it was fine then I pulled the valve cover to check the wiring. The molded plug and wiring melted, it’s fried. Has anyone seen this happen. What must I do to repair. Thanks This is what I found Yep
That’s melted wire, the molded plug is melted also
Well...you are going to need those parts. I'd guess that you had a short somewhere, which caused that to happen. I don't know if the problem could be an injector or a glow plug though. Someone else might have some guidance on that.
Therein lies the reason Ford went to the new connector with the larger glow plug terminals on the 99-up. The 95-97 trucks had that issue A LOT.
There is a lot of current going through those little terminals and it looks like the resistance got to yours...even though they're the larger terminals. None of them are immune to it - I've replaced a lot of valve cover gaskets and harnesses because of that problem.
I think the newer design UVCH does not require the 50 cent mod but hopefully others will chime in on that.
When I installed new OEM UVCH's in 2018, they appeared to have an updated clip design. After my second failure attempting to install the clips, I just cut and put 2 quarters in.
Despite never having an UVCH issue, the PO had a Dorman installed on the driver side and 20 year old OEM on the passenger side.
I progress, don’t have much time between work and doctors. Trying to complete another VA claim. This is what I pulled out New gasket, harness and pigtail Existing plug to valve cover gasket
Yup, Glow plug wires grounding out somehow, burning the plug. Mine was only one pin, but I had to do a similar repair right after I bought my truck many years ago.
Yep, glow plug wire were the problem, which compromised the injector wires to #7 injector. I got that taken care of and checked resistance at the 42 pin connector. All ohmed out close to 2.9. Checked the drivers side and got #2@ 195, #4@6.5, #6@6.4, and #8@ 119. Pulled the plugs and valve cover everything looked like new, so I pulled the harness and found the plastic connectors @ 2 and 8 were broken inside the injector plug. So I replaced with new gasket and harness, ohmed out normal. Buzz test normal, contribution test normal. No codes, runs smooth. Throwing high resistance Wife helping out with #8 glow plug wire
