After thinking about it more today, I believe I'm going this way as well. I do a lot of city driving and I think simpler may be better in this case.
Mine will come on in reverse or via upfitter. For me I only really need them to come on in reverse in the winter when I'm plowing. So I installed a switch behind the bumper so I can disable the reverse feature for the warmer months and if I need them on I can use the upfitter switch.
I just ordered a pair of the f150 LED lights. I will wire these so the lights on normally when the reverse lights are on but I will be able to turn them off with the upfitter switch when I want them off.
I am wiring them directly to the trailer reverse circuit and I will use a 5 pin relay with the NC circuit to open and close the ground with upfitter switch as the signal.

you can make an auto-manual circuit with a 5 pin relay...
just added reverse/puddle lights that are auto on with unlock/door open + auto on in reverse + manual on with aux 👍
