TPMS False Alarm?

On the way to the campground the other day, our aftermarket TPMS alarm went off and was showing 45 psi on one of the tires on the 5th wheel. I pulled off to the side of the road and manually checked that tire and the pressure was 85 psi (about same as the others, hot). So I put the sensor in my pocket and turned the system off for the remaining 10 miles or so. I figure it was a false alarm maybe because the sensor worked itself loose a little bit on the valve stem?

After getting to the campground I put the same sensor back on the tire and turned the system back on and all is fine. No alarm. But haven't driven anywhere - we'll be here a month.

So, are false alarms like this common? Or, is there something I should fix/check before we hit the road to our next campground?

Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions.

Rich

I haven't heard of a lot of issues with these. It might help us to know that make and model unit you have.

I"m using TST's 507 that I got from Techno RV. about 1 year ago. The sensor is the "cap" type (not pass thru) appropriate for rubber valve stems.

There is a double nut feature on the sensor to help prevent theft and back-off that I'm not using currently because I didn't want to mess with the special tool when I needed to add air.

But, if this happens again I'll probably start using it.

Thanks,

Rich

That looks like a good unit. Maybe that sensor is going bad or maybe it got shaken just right (that's a stretch, but remotely possible).

If the sensor was loose and not sealed properly, it would have let air out of the tire and showed whatever the current air pressure is. Like when it let enough air out to lose 5PSI, it would have sensed 80PSI. Etc.

I'd say keep an eye on it. Maybe whatever its issue has passed and/or maybe removing it and reinstalling it fixed something.

Thanks, yes I will keep an eye on it. Hopefully it's just a one-off thing.

Sunspots? Gremlins?

What does TST say the typical battery life of their sensor is? I don't think this is the problem, I'm just curious to know how long their battery lasts.

Actually, the batteries could be the reason. After reading your post, I did a Google search for "TST TPMS battery life expectancy." Google came back with "approximately one year."

My system is about one year old, maybe a month or two more.

So, if/when it does happen again, I'll replace the batteries in the sensors first and see if that works.

Thanks,

Rich
