I went super K.I.S.S. on my truck. No light, just a momentary "ON" push-button starter switch purchased from NAPA many years ago that grounds out the terminal that normally goes to the PCM to command the glow plugs to power up. I know that it all is still working because the dome light slightly dims down when I push the button to activate the glow plug relay. So I don't really need a light to know if the glow plugs are powered or not, LOL.
In the years past, the glow plug's only function in life was to provide enough heat to the combustion chamber to get the fuel injected to reach that temperature thresh hold enough to ignite and get the engine to run. Nothing more. So I've adapted a long term strategy to keep the glow plugs from burning out due to over-use just to try and control smoke on an engine that makes smoke during normal engine operation.
I’ve had my GPR indicator lamp for 7 years, works flawlessly. And when my OEM GPR bit the dust I replaced it with the White Rodgers - only way to go IMHO.
