So I got a question for y’all. I have an 87 f150 that was supposed to be a 302 truck but someone sawpped a 351w into. I went and got a instrument cluster with a tach to put I into my truck but the tach isn’t working. Am I missing something I thought it was a direct swap. The cluster was out of a 90. Is it related to the spedo at all because mine currently doesn’t work
87 to 91 clusters are plug and play as long as its a gas. Diesel clusters are different. The engine harness will tell the tach if its a 8 cylinder or six. The speedometer is a mechanical cable driven type so nothing electronic like the 92's and up trucks are.
Best thing is to troubleshoot and see whats going on. could be a hack job in wiring harness when they swapped engines

ok thanks. I’ll start to try to trace down wires. Anything in particular I should look for. I know the cluster came out of a gas truck I pulled it today. Thanks for the response
Disconnect the speedometer cable at the transmission/transfer case then spin the cable. You might have to use a drill if you cannot turn it fast enough to register. Does the speedometer now work?

Ok thanks I’ll check it out tomorrow when I get off work I appreciate it man
Ok sorry for the late responses work has been crazy. The spedo cable is broken. An for the tach I was looking at the wiring and it seems like I don’t have the wires in the harness for it
