My 1986 F250 came without an intemittent wiper switch. That was news to me. I thought something was broken, I didn't realize it was a Ford feature :-)
I am going to be in California next week and should have some time to pull an intermittent switch from a junkyard. What newer models of trucks would be a good donor vehicle? I am thinking of a Ford Bronco or 1990s F150 or F250...
I have never messed with it before, but if I remember other people's conversations, the governor and the interval switch are made together and need to be unplugged and kept together. Adding them to your truck should be a plug and play exercise. Here's a picture below.
My 86 XL has intermittent wipers, it was an add on accessory for me, beyond the trim package level.
The intermittent module failed on mine a couple years ago. I got the Dennis Carpenter re-engineered module. Brand new it was close to 100 bucks. The originals seem to go bad and used ones going for 50 bucks didn't seem like a bargain especially if they only last a few years.
I think I bought it from bronco graveyard though...not Dennis Carpenter who developed it.
My 81 Custom did not come with intermittent wipers so I got the box & switch off Ebay.
Yes you need the switch & box and it is a plug in the only other thing there is a ground wire that needs to be screwed to the body.
I think I used the same screw that holds the box to the bottom lip of the dash.
Best up grade I have done.

Take another light dimmer switch and mount it next to the existing one. Wire it to the wiper system. Step on it for wipers step on it again to turn off.

Then you have to splice in to the wiper system wires and run wires from the wiper harness down to that floor mounted switch.
It is an easy up grade.
Think the hardest part is getting **** off the stalk of the switch.
BTW had to use it this morning going to work still works great after 2+ years on the road.

I did the conversion on my truck and it is plug and play, you will need the delay wiper switch and the governor. Your OE harness on your truck which plugs into the 2 speed wiper switch will plug into the governor and then the governor plugs into the delay wiper switch and then you ground a wire to the dash and you are good to go.
As far as what years to look at I cant say for sure I know 80 - 86 are all the same I just did a search for the part number on ebay and bought one myself as junkyards around here dont keep old vehicles as city ordinance prevents junkyards from expanding or opening up in the city limits post city ordinance.
I also did this conversion on my 85 and like Fuzz it is a blessing to have.I sure could of used this years ago as this truck was my dailey driver one way to work 55 miles. What a pita that was turning on off on off on off TR
