I can't see enough of the front of the converter to be able to tell. The blue that I see in the third photo looks like paint. If it is paint, that is not the original converter. Ford didn't paint the converters.
Where do I look at the front of the converter?
Do I need a borescope or..?
The nuts on the bellhousing.. well that looks like the front of the flexplate, I don't think I can see the front of the converter if I take those off.
Only thing I did not see mentioned was checking the solenoid pack connector, on the body end.
I had pulled my e4 out for the same reasons and actually I bought the truck for a song, expecting to rebuild the trans. I actually found the wiring at the plug frayed. I replaced the plug end, about $50 from Napa. I also put some dei heat shield material around the plug and about 8" up the wiring harness.
Yea Ranger, thanks for the post - all that was checked when solenoid pack was replaced.
Anyway, I'm writing with an update.
Trans shop took the transmission apart and found nothing specific. According to AAMCO's internal tech notes, E4od should have the latest "F5" pump replaced "to correct the pump check-valve condition, which can cause gear slip, gear slamming or high pressure condition."
While at it, I had them rebuild the entire thing.
Shifts like a dream with a rebuilt nationwide warranty.
