I've searched, and have not read any of my symtoms.
91 F150 2x2 4.9
A few months ago, the trans started shifting hard after about twenty miles. Then got progressively worce, and got so bad before I parked it that if felt like I got rear ended when shifting.
I pulled the pan, drained the t/c removed the valve body (except for the solenoids) and cleaned thoroughly. New fluid/filter.
After all that it still shifts hard, (not as bad as before) 1-2 is the worst, and downshifting 3-2 is pretty hard. When I really get on it, its not as bad. Makes no difference whether OD is on or off.
I checked the solenoid connector, looks ok. eec gave me an 11, book says thats a "no codes found" or something like that.....
Trans has 95k miles on it, and was rebuilt by dealer at 39k.
Blue, Take it to a shop that does transmission diagnostic work. You may have a problem in you electronic shift control system that their diagnostic equipment can find. Until you have ruled out a computer controlled problem, replacing parts may just be a waste of time and money. Good luck
SDawgz & abullicer, thanks for the info as I have been experiencing an E40D problem thats similar. I have an overdrive thats slips out after the truck warms up. I just replaced the MLPS and still have the same problem. My next victim is the FIPL and the Vehicle Speed Sensor and possibly the Electronic trans relays in the Power Distribution Box. I may be headed down the "replacing parts" and getting nowhere path, and maybe I should take it to a "reliable" shop for an analysis. Whattya think?
Just got my trans running for a few months after a rebuild. Found out that MLPS was bad. It was causing the tranny to not engage in 1st gear while in Drive so I was going from a dead stop in 2nd gear. 1st gear was non-existent in Drive but worked when manually selected. Now my problem is the OD occassionally slips in and out.I did notice that my Cruise Control went out way back before the rebuild. I think now my Speed Sensor is defective.
Abullicer, Thanks for the info. That was where I headed after I change the FIPL (aka Throttle Positioning Sensor), which I have just discovered has a Torx tip I don't own!!!!!!! Why am I not surprised? And, since the new part doesn't come with new screws, I will probably have to buy a huge assortment in order to hit on the right Torx tip!!!!! Man I tell ya if I had known this "heavy duty" F250 truck was gonna be such a primadonna and had more sensors than a Cardiac Care Unit (which is where I'll be before this is over) I would've considered some other vehicle, or sold an organ to afford a new primadonna truck....LOL. I realize that a 92 is eleven years old and I expected some problems as the 3rd owner, but these trucks seem to be stuffed with "delicate" electronics that apparently aren't ruggedized to match the "heavy duty" truck frames. The parts I am and will be replacing have obviously been changed already at least once in it's lifetime before I bought it. Ah, for the good old days when you could diagnose a vehicle without sophisticated equipment. Now I'm showing my age, eh?....LOL
I think these early E4OD are shoddily designed. Damn engineers asleep at the wheel, cheap aluminum parts and a host of little things that do go haywire cost me $1500 to bulletproof mine. The little electrical gremlins cant be ignored since sensors like MLPS or Speed sensor, etc.. effect the trans attitude. My next upgrade is an improve Solenoid pack. I guess that also control the fluid volume. I noticed my old solenoid pack warping at the circuit board as I was checking it. It still works fine but I dont trust it. If you ever decide to rebuild, go online and look up everythng you can about bulletproofing the E4OD if you intend on keeping it for a while. Good luck!
Yeah I have discovered the same thing much to my dismay. I have read online and talked with transmission shops that there have been upgrades on these E40D's right from the womb and it appears that'll it'll be that wayto it's tomb. I wish now I had researched this purchase more before I bought it, and here I was more worried about owning a diesel more so than then transmission it has. Little did I apparently know!!! Oh well, if I do keep it for awhile I am definitely going to the "bullet proof" route. Thanks for the info.
