Swapped my fuel filters yesterday, cycled the ignition 7 times to purge the system before starting it and checking for leaks. This morning went to start the truck and it definitely cranked longer than normal, but started okay. Short drive to work seems like my “mikes to empty” is dropping allot faster than normal. No puddles this morning or obvious leaks. Any ideas? Also what replacement cap for the filter drain is everyone using? Definitely think I’m going to swap that out.
If you had a leak you would know it for sure. My guess is that’s your studying the number as your driving and noticing it falling because mayb you never really look at it. Mine falls like crazy in the morning before the truck is warm.
I just keep an extra OEM drain cap in case the one on the truck has issues. Granted, I might check mine once a year just being curious but that is what the water in fuel light is for. I look at it this way, if you cant trust the light, why trust any of them. How many take their trucks in for a routine checkup even though their check engine light does not come on? The reason the OEM breaks is more to do with operator error than a defective part. Yes, it’s not the most robust design but if you start turning it before the little tabs are seated, you run the risk of breaking it.
Check the under hood filter to make sure all the connections are seated and it's not leaking there. If it was leaking bad though, I'd think you'd smell or see it so I doubt it's an issue. Otherwise, as others have said, you might be looking for an issue when there isn't one to be found.
