My aerostar's tranny is acting funny between 45-50mph. It seems like it's hunting for gears when accelerating at this speed. Checked the fluid and it looks like new motor oil. Any ideas??
my 91 had trouble right about that speed as it was not shifting into overdrive, or not out of it well. i eventually had mine rebuilt. can you tell if yours is shifting through all geatrs in normal driving? or is it only when accelerating? how many miles on the tranny? rick
That's exactly what's happening It sometimes doesn't want to shift into OD. It seems to be shifting alright in the other gears till it gets to 3rd and into OD. If you don't mind me asking, what did it cost for a rebuild?
i shoped around, the best i could come up with was $1,200 with a one yr or 10 thou. mi warrenty. i ended up going to a small independent guy with a good local rep. i was lucky enough to hear through the grape vine. i dodged aamco because of cost(1500) and the were kinda rude, i know everyone doesn't drive and love old aerostars, but he-- its my money.
well anyway i've been happy. the guy also covered 1 year check up. i now have about 65 thousand miles on it without problem. i even took it back after warrenty was up thinking it was screwing up, but he found sparkplug wires were old and screwing up on accelleration... i replaced them, and all was right again.
you should check the forum "search" for info. i know many guys have reported about these transmissions known as the "A4LD " with problems, and solutions....there is by the way a overdrive adjustment nut on the tranny, check in haynes manual. i never adjusted mine, may help. haynes tells about setting it to 10 lbs torque then backing off 3 and a half turns on 4.0 litre engines and 2 turns on the trannys on the 3.0 and four cylinder engine. forum search is found at bottom of page, enter search words.. i always check what other people have said. it helps, at least to be smarter as you figure it out. rick
