Aerostar vs Explorer

Hi,

I currently drive an older 89 Aerostar, and wanted some feedback from any of you that Bought a used/new explorer to replace the Aerostar with?

I have had very little trouble with the Aerostar, other than the usual design flaws (having to do the front brakes every 20K, etc) and wondered what models and years I should avoid when looking for a good used Explorer?

I'd want a V8 most likely, but I heard the 4.0L V6 is a decent engine too? Also, are these AWD/4WD all the time? or can you choose between those settings or also 2wd?

Did they make different drive trains for these? or are all the Trannys the 4ald like I have in my Aerostar (the ones with the 4.0L)

Thanks for any help or insight

i had a areostar just got into a 95 explorer limited edition, and its a way better ride then the areostar, the air ride system makes it nice to drive, i do use more fuel then i thought it would but its well worth it, i have the 4L v6 and it gives me enough power, but i am used to driving alot of 4 bangers, i had a problem with the lights out moduale, or daytime lights moduale as they call it in canada but cause of this site i was able to fix it myself instead of spending 500 bucks at the dealer, mine has 4wd, which comes in handy cause i live on a 22% grade and works awsome in the snow to get up it as for the drive train i dont know much about it but after reading the manual it looks expensive with all the computer stuff running it, but mine has 215,000 kms on it and it still runs really good no problems at all hope that helps a little bit

Yeah, I guess the 4.0L engine would be enough for me, since I am used to my low powered 3.0... I always liked the height of the van, easy in and out for anyone (old Ladies, etc) But, you're right, I do feel every bump for sure, and I hate it in the snow, always have...

I'd love to find like what you have there, about a 1995-97ish, 100K would be better for me, or even 125K... The body is important to me, because That is where you can end up spending a lot of money quickly for Rust, etc... My Rockers in my 89 are starting to rust, and it's just a matter of time before they start all coming through from the inside of the van, out... New England weather :-)

Thanks,
Bob

Remember there are two different 4.0 engines in that timeframe. The 4.0 "pushrod" engine OHV and the 4.0 SOHC. I'm rusty, but I don't think the SOHC came out until 96 or 97. The pushrod engine only has about 170 HP; the SOHC has 205 HP. My preference is the 205hp version, however, it did have its share of recalls, including the cam chain tensioners. You'd want one that doesn't have a diesel like rattle at idle. The 4ald mated to the OHV, the 5r55e to the SOHC.

I have one of each right now. Both 95's and I love em both the same. I have had very little problems with the minivan, 180,000 kms now and still going strong. I can't believe the millage it gets on the highway ( 3.0 L ) And my Explorer I only just got but millage is good too way better than the 91 explorer I just got rid of. this one has the 4.0 L but being a 95 the power seems a lot better than the 91. i believe you can get 3 different options for 4x4. AWD, or 2 wheel with auto 4X4 + 4 low. and then the 2wd, 4wd high and 4wd low. I think those are the 3 transfer case options. depending on year to year I guess. and a 4.0 L SOHO has plenty of power for the gas prices these days
