2002 Expedition, 5.4L, 220,000 miles. At 168,000 (when I bought it) I replaced the intake manifold (along with a bunch of other maintenance in preparation for a trip to Texas to tow back another car).
I have now developed a fairly substantial coolant leak that I simply CANNOT locate.
It does not leak at idle. Rev the engine and I immediately (okay, *almost* immediately) get a stream of coolant running down the engine/transmission joint on the passenger side. It isn't the crossover pipe. I've run my bore scope down in there and waaaay in the back, once in a while if I have it positioned perfectly, I can see coolant spray when I rev the engine, but I cannot twist the head around to see the source.
Other than the crossover pipe in front, is there coolant in the intake at the rear? Could the intake have cracked? What are other potential sources? I'm assuming that the only way to really figure this out is to pull the intake and get back in there....
It could be the intake manifold gasket back there, or could it be coming from a heater hose or that pipe that runs under the intake ? No way to tell unless you pressurize the system and go over it. Do you have a coolant system pressure test kit ? If you pump it up to 15 psi it should show any leak you have. You can buy a kit on Amazon for $60, or some autoparts stores have loaners you can borrow.
