I have a 1992 Explorer XLT 4X4 with a auto trans that will not shift 1st thing in the morning. It seems to stay in 1st gear until you get down the road a mile or two and then shifts into second and it will be fine the rest of the day. It only happens after it sits overnight. The trans was rebuilt 2 years ago and just started doing this after a fluid and filter change recently. I have read that it could be the speed governer sticking but how do you get to it and what does it look like (any pics anywhere)? Also, when the filter was changed, the new replacement was different but still fit in the same spot and NAPA said it was a direct replacement so I used it. Could that cause the problem? Please HELP!!!!

that has a plastic bottom. This filter needs a shorter screw or a spacer otherwise it drops down and sucks air. As fluid heats up, it expands and you don't see the problem. Also, did you transfer the O rings? The speed governor is inside the extension housing. You can get at it if you remove the transfer case, easier if you remove the housing. It will fall apart when you unscrew it. weight, spring, valve, held in by the housing. The valve gets scoring marks. A manual is $16 at www.bulkparts.com
Thanks for the reply! The filter I received from NAPA was all metal and smaller than the stock filter. I did transfer the O-rings and everything seemed to fit just fine so I went with it. On the speed governor, is it the unit that looks like a magnetic pick-up against the output shaft that looks like a speed sensor or something?
