I have a 1992 4x4 f150 I have been driving for several years. It has a 5.0 motor and automatic/overdrive trans running 33 inch tires.
Ever since I have had this truck it has had a really hard shift from 1st to 2nd if you let the motor rev past 1500-1800+ and let the trans shift automatically.
If you manually shift the trans it will shift soft.
I have heard this could be the 1-2 shift servo or shift servo spring, have any of you had this happen to you? Do you have any suggestions?
Also if I get on the interstate and wind the motor to 65-70mph shortly it will start blowing trans fluid (I think it is coming from the front trans seal). I don't know if both of these could be caused by the same problem or not.
Mine shifts to hard it jerks and makes it feel like it is going to tear something out if you wind it to 2500 and let it shift automatically. I shift manually a lot to save the rear axle and universals.
the 92 overdrive doesn't have a vacuum modulator does it?
I have read before the shift accumulator valve would cause this and I have also heard the shift accumulator spring is bad for breaking and causing a hard shift but I am not that familiar with these trans.
the 1/2 accumulator spring is most likely broken.....
Tks, how hard is that to replace? Can you buy the spring separately or would it come in a shift kit.
On another not I fixed my torque converter problem today. I got up under the truck and found one wire completely cut and another wire that was still connected but was ripped like an animal had chewed on it. I reconnected these two wires and now my torque converter is locking up fine.
Before at 60mph in overdrive I was turning close to 23-2400rpm now in overdrive with the converter locked the rpms drop to about 16-1700rpm at 60mph. Now my trans also shifts faster if you manually shift it. My problem now is I don't have the enough power and at 55-60 when it shifts to overdrive it seems real weak, which I guess can be expected with a stock 5.0 and stock 3.55 gearing and 33-12.50 tires.
What is the easiest way to add power to these 5.0's.
I am thinking
Overdrive pulleys,
Maybe a computer chip(Do these make much difference in pulling performance)
I can tell you from what I've read here, DON"T buy a chip. I'd say you might possibly need to go to a lower gear, especially if you've got oversize tires. The best person ( I think ) to answer your questions is Conanski.
My trans is a 4R70W but similar to the AODE. The B&M shift kit came with an updated piston and heavier springs for the 1-2 accumulator. I also used a brake hone to clean up the bore; flushed with brake clean and lubed with ATF. Not a bad job and valve body can be done also. Can be done on your back after pan drop. watch for little ***** in valve body: pull straight down carefully. Follow directions in kit explicitly for updates. Good Luck
