Noise on startup -5F

I hadn't started my truck in week or so and had to move it, when I hit the auto start is sounded like this, which is louder than I usual. I am uploading the video I made to see what you guys think, or if you have heard this sound before.

The video was too long to up load here, so I put it on Rumble.com and here is the link:

Sounds like mine did last Thursday it was about 5 Deg. here in DSM Mine did not start hammering until it came up on high idle by its self. After about another 5 min it quieted down but that noise is scary.
I did dump the 15-40 and had 10-30 in it. I am guessing injector knock looks like next winter i will go with the 5-40 full syn rotella....

Very common -- I noticed the heater plug --- was it plugged in?

Even if "plugged" in, it's a good idea to cycle the glow plugs multiple times (with all that snow, I'd cycle 7-8 times) before letting her rip. Moving to 5-40 along with a stiction additive (I use HotShots) will also help .

Folks need to be aware that the glow plugs can (and do) stay on longer than the light is on. Watch the system voltage and that will show you when they shut off. In cold weather, they can easily stay on for two minutes.

Mark, You are correct -- I've instrumented and the PCM commanded on time varies from as short as 1 second to 120 seconds. (avg I've "trapped" is 30-45 seconds)

GPCM will intervene and cut these off (Hard Stop) at 180 seconds..............(regardless of PCM commands)

All the above are still too short in deep chill environments (that's why the need for multiple cycles as the block heater frequently doesn't reach req'd places -- NOTABLY on the driver side of the engine)

It is in the 20’s today, when I started it, it sounded normal, so I’ll chock the loudness up to being so cold. Thanks for the responses.
