Exhaust

Can't figure out much on YouTube or on the site. So, I have a 2022 250 with a 6.2 I want to replace the just the muffler. I have seen full systems but nothing on just a muffler. I am asking what size are tubing, should I remove the resonators to avoid droning? Any suggestions on a muffler? Don't want ridiculous loud...maybe like an old 5.0 stang or something.

I did a muffler delete and it sounded great at idle, but the drone was absolutely terrible at all other RPMs.
I added back on a Flowmaster 50 Big Block Muffler and I’ve been happy. Deeper throaty sound, but mild. No drone. It’s a direct weld on replacement.

Just bought a 2020 7.3 gasser. I've been reviewing exhaust and engine dynos for the last 3 days. I raced 5.0 mustangs back in the 90s. Did my share of engine rebuilds and experiments. I'm going with the afe tailpipe that deletes the rear stock muffler and resonator. I like the sound from the videos I've listened to and quite honestly that's all your gonna get unless you change the complete system with long tubes. That's the first thing you learn on the track. Exhaust doesn't benefit anything unless you change the entire system. Meaning you have to open up everything to make flow. Anyway, I'll try and remember to take some vids before and after install. The 5 star live wire tuner is also in route. On a side note the 7.3 has a quite sufficient air box with a nice open intake. In my opinion all this needs is a wet air filter and leave the air box alone. A Cai and throttle body will do nothing unless you do head work and/or a cam along with a full long tube Exhaust.

Just my opinion based on 7 years of racing 5.0s. Oh and 5 Star tried it already and got hardly anything out of a larger throttle body.

I love this new 7.3. It reminds me of the good Ole days. Bout time Ford went back to basics.

Peace

LOL,,, I am not shooting for performance. I raced plenty of 5.0 stangs back in the day! However, You don't need cat backs just to change the sound. Muffler delete sounds like trash on these trucks. I want to change the sound... Thats it! My post was asking about if anyone has done just a muffler swap. I am aware of the many resonators as well, But, thanks for your input.

I don't understand your reply. I was replying to the thread subject of exhaust under the 7.3 liter thread. Also I'm not deleting the resonators and I'm very aware of the sound quality of deleting the wrong resonator. My post was specific to only pulling off the tail pipe behind the forward resonator. I could go into the science behind back pressure and exhaust scavenging if you want. Or we can talk about the SF600 flowbench and porting procedures.

That's the section I'm talking about. Do what ever you want back there that pleases your ear. One of the best sounds I've heard is the afe straight pipe or the big block 50 flowmaster tfltruck did with two pipes out the back. All the dynos I've researched have yielded nothing unless you did a full replacement with long tubes. If you talk to a real exhaust guy he'll tell you to go long tubes and then have a custom shop do the rest because they will find the hot spot in the dual system to locate the crossover. That's a lost science of a truly balance dual exhaust system.

sorry for the ramble but your on the right path in my opinion. No need to spend a lot on exhaust for hp if your not opening up the engine for more air in.

I installed a full 4” cat back on my 7.3L. It’s from Heartthrob Exhaust in Minnesota. Sounds amazing and great quality. I installed an MBRP resonator after a couple hundred miles because of the drone in the cab. It still drones too much for my old ears unfortunately. I’m installing the stock exhaust back on with a 50 series Flowmaster muffler here shortly. Good luck with yours. I am learning the hard (expensive)way

Anyone know where to buy just a y pipe that will bolt directly into the place of the first resonator behind the cats?
