How do I tell what size injectors are in my 2002 7.3 powerstroke and is it time to upgrade? 280k miles.
You can pull the valve covers and look at the stamp on the solenoid, but that is not definitive and could be 100% wrong. If you don't have a chip, you likely have OEM AD injectors.
The only way to be sure is to pull one and have it flow tested at a reputable injector shop like Bitterroot or Rosewood.
At 280,000 miles, the injectors are likely tired. But, they could go for another 50,000 miles or more no problem.
Only you know if it is time for an upgrade based on your budget, time, desire, mechanical necessity and curiosity.
Could be a bad ICP sensor? I don’t have a lot of experience with this so take what I say with a gain of salt haha.
If you pull the plug on it and it’s oily you’re probably due for a new sensor. Please ONLY replace with genuine Motorcraft sensor as parts store units are garbage.
Hey guys I'm still getting a 1280 code. Why????????????????????
Why? Why is the sky blue? Why are ***** good? I don't know, they just are.
I do love me a good Joe Dirt quote. As for your 1280, that is 1 of the most BS generalized codes you can get. Can be caused by bad icp sensor, dirty or weak ipr, hpo leak both internally and externally, tired injectors, tired hpop, wiring gremlins, lpo issues, low fuel pressure, and others I'm sure I'm forgetting. So you might want to pack a lunch, because it could be kicking your *** for a while. Start w/ the simple and free stuff first and just work through the list. Good luck, and thanks for the opening to ”Drop some Dirt”.

You’re gonna stand there, owning a fireworks stand, and tell me you don’t have no whistling bungholes, no spleen spliters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker donts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistling kitty chaser?”
Another Joe Dirt fan.
On a serious note let us know what you come up with. I realize your relatively new here but we don't bite..
. Perhaps you could try one fix at a time and let us know how it goes.

Pull the ICP sensor plug and look for oil in sensor. Also, unplug it while engine is running. If there’s oil in the plug or big changes when it’s unplugged, these are signs you need a new ICP sensor.
You’ll want a scan tool that allows you to monitor ICP and IPR DC. The FORscan Lite app ($6), a BAFX OBD2 BT dongle (~$25) and an android phone or tablet does this very well AND economically.
Two new ICP sensors, new IPR and pigtail. I have the BAFX Scannner and Android phone and app. IPR and ICP #'s are good. I have a new Motorcraft ICP pigtail but haven't installed it yet. Hopefully that will clear it if not going for Adrenalin HPOP and new lines. 298k miles on stock injectors maybe due for an upgrade. Also have some oil leaks needing attention like turbo pedestal, oil rail etc.

You should be able to watch ICP/IPR DC and see when it pops the P1280. Usually happens during extended heavy throttle like on ramp or ascending a steep grade. We want to see a sustained 2800psi, but tired injectors or HPOP will allow ICP to drop. My last HPOP would tank ICP down to 1100psi during WOT and I see tired injectors that drop to below 2000psi quite often.
Consider doing a data log and use the charting tool so you can study and share the results from FORscan Lite.
