Sorry for the delayed reply. I got quarantined over this virus BS.
this is what it looks like.
Please provide a pic of the bed in total. Looks like a total clusterF of a custom job and whoever did it narrowed the actual bed tailgate width by extending the sides (after eliminating stock tail-lights) inward. So, if what I just said is true, purchasing any different “stock” tailgate isn’t going to fix your issue because they’re all going to be too wide. You’d be better off undoing the custom work to restore proper tailgate width, depending on how they performed the mod. Or as suggested above, bulldoze the bed and seek a replacement.
New bed. Start over. The cost of the body work is costly and will surpass what a decent bed would cost. Are there any more modifications done to it? It gives me a headache just looking at it, how about pics of the entire truck?

Are you really up for it? He took the Tbird hubs off already! Is it time for the Red pill?
Hopefully the red pill doesn't do permanent damage. I need to hang on to the rest of the chromosomes I still have. Looks like they lost a whole bunch of them when they built this truck.
Methinks there may have been "Recreational Pharmaceuticals" involved in the design process
Oh those recreational drugs and hippie Flower-girl" chicks of the '70's were a very fun pair to enjoy back then.
The Millennial's today are no different, and there still are Flower-girl hippie chicks (according to my son), and mushrooms.
Someone put some time into altering and fitting the abortion of a tailgate. But, it is different and cleverly done.
If you were closer to Kansas "I'd give it a go", repairing that gate... Judging by the fact it split along where they welded it together, I suspect it needs to be dissembled to access all of the inside, renforced inside and welded properly or problems would reapear in just a small amount of road use...
