I just serviced my 1996 e40d transmission, new gasket, filter and solenoid pack. I drained my torque converter but when I was putting the drain plug back in it seems to bottom out with a few threads still showing. Should this plug tighten all the way against the torque converter or is this normal? I don’t want to strip it.

I completely understand not wanting to damage the converter. You don’t want to have to remove the transmission to replace the converter if you don’t have to.
Just for the future … you have an Electronic 4 speed OverDrive (e4od/ E4OD) transmission. Not an e40d, E40 or Ed40.
It's an NPT type thread, you can use gasoila or Teflon tape and snug it so there's no leakeage.
I don't recommend this. If some gets loose inside the transmission it can block an orifice or stick valve. The thread is designed to seal without adding any sealant. Don't add any.

Good to know, done many like that but will follow your advice.
If you're really careful and don't get any inside the trans it's fine. If a small bit does get loose inside it has the potential to do a lot of expensive damage.
