1996 F150 351W/E40D 4X4. 333,000 miles. Halfway through a 900 mile drive yesterday my truck lost speedometer function while cruising along the interstate and the odometer went blank. The speedometer pegged to maximum. Torque converter unlocked. Overdrive light began flashing. I slowed down, and plugged in my code reader. Found a pending code for P0500 (VSS malfunction). I pushed the O/D OFF button, trans shifted to third, then pushed it again, and the trans was very obviously in limp mode, with a very firm shift back into overdrive. Trans temps were typical, 145F and 150F (two sensors?). I was looking for the next exit, and wondering about the PSOM, then thumped the dash...and the speedo function recovered. Drove the next 400 miles without issue.
Where should I start? Is there a likely bad ground in my instrument cluster?
