Awesome 79 pulling ford, thats what I needed. I guess the operator at Summit did not understand what I was looking for. I am going to order the kit with hubs.
Thanks every one!
swapping a 203 to a 205 is not just a drop in affair, at least not what i have learned about it...maybe someone who has done it themselves can chime in??
this is what i understand....
you will need:
205 case
205 case crossmember
205 auto trans intermediate housing (3"longer)
205 c-6 output shaft (requires trans dissasembly to install)
205 shifter handle
the 203 is like 3" (??) thicker than the 205, therefore the intermediate housing needs to be swapped to the longer 205 version (and corrosponding output shaft).
however, if i understand correctly, you can just drop the 205 in, but it will put the case too far forward, and thus the shifter handles will not clear the opening in the floor, your front shaft will be too long, and your rear too short....
anyhoo, this is what i got after researching it for about 3 weeks....i still have a 203!
btw, i have seen SEVERAL 205 cases sell on ebay for well under 100 bux...of course shipping would be pricey!
fwiw, i only put the superwinch manual lockouts on mine, and run in 4h lock all the time with the front huibs locked out...seems ok to me.
I am in going to change a 203 to a 205 very soon. It was my understanding that the 205 will bolt right in place of the 203 when they are both divorced. I think this thread is talking about married ones but wanted to be sure before I tackled the project.
My truck is a 1974 F250 with a np203 divorced case and my sons truck is a 1972 F250 with a 205 divorced case by all aprearances and measurements if we chose I think we could switch one for the other, not that I could talk him into it.
Just an update...I installed the Mile Marker conversion kit from Summit Racing this past weekend into my 78 F150 full time 4x4.
The kit included front locking hubs and the transfer case conversion. This conversion replaces the four spider gears with half gears that locks the rear output shaft thus separating it from the front. It is a pretty slick conversion and appears to be very rugged. I completed the conversion in an afternoon.
I can tell the difference when driving the truck - less drag, better handling. And the truck now gets, like, 47 mpg.
I'd recommend it- total cost including tax: $104. I ordered the kit on a Saturday night and it arrived the following Tuesday morning (last week).
