4 * 4 Not working
Hello All 1991 F150 5.8 Auto trans 4 by 4. Manual locking hubs
We had our first snow and guess what?? no 4 wheel.
Light on dash, when I checked the drive shaft it felt like it was engaged. When I first pulled the lever I felt a slight vibration.
Question (1) Had brakes done can this have anything to do with this problem? shop had to remove hubs to do this work.
(2) What else can I check??
Thanks
AL
If it did then I would suspect the guy didn't put the hubs back together correctly. Manual hubs are pretty simple , but maybe he forgot the springs, overtorqued the lock nuts, putt too much grease on the hubs(a very light coat is all that is needed, not gobs). Did he put the locking handles in correctly and does it seem like they lock?
You could try keeping it in 2WD and lock the hubs and listen for the extra noise and rumble that locked hubs make. On my 94 250 it is noticable especially above 60mph. If the hubs do make the noise then something in the transfercase or linkage is wrong.
You could also jack up the front end and turn the wheels with hubs locked and unlocked to see if the shafts turn etc.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
