I have a (new to me) 78 F150 4x4 with 351m, C6 auto. I have never had one of these fulltime 4x4 trucks before and at this point, I can't say I am very impressed.
What exactly is the difference between HI and HI Lock? Even when in HI (which I thought would have been the equivalent of 2H in a part time 4x4 system), it sounds and feels as if all of the running gear is engaged (as in 4H in a part time system)....which, during normal driving situations, sounds and feels like a huge waste of gas.
Can I install part-time locking hubs like on my '85 F250 so as allow the front end to free wheel?
They made those with the auto tranny full time. The Hi is similar to all wheel drive. You can use it on the pavement. Hi-loc is the same as 4 hi in a regular 4x4. Same with the low. I believe it is mile marker that makes the part time conversion for the transfer case and hubs. While some people like the full time, most think it was a dumb idea. Ted
Put a Part Time kit in there or you will use alot more gas. The Hi is just for normal Driving and the High Lock is for maximum traction offroad. It is a FULL time tranfercase so it is pulling the front end ALL the time. A Part time kit is not hard to install and I do recomend it.
Thanks! That's what I was hoping for. I did a search for Milemarker and got this:
Milemarker 95-92203 $254.95
Shaft Kit for GM and Ford NP203 without locking Hubs 1973-79
Fits Vehicle: GM and Ford Trucks 1973-79
Milemarker Shaft Kit for GM and Ford NP203 without locking Hubs 1973-79.
Is this what I need?
What is included in the kit?
What is involved in this conversion?
it would be cheaper for you to just find a used np 205 transfercase and swap them. They usually go for 50-100 bucks and would be stronger then the 203. The 203 is chain driven and the 205 is all gear driven and stronger. I believe they are a direct swap, even your yokes will work fine and so will the driveshafts.
most 78 and 79's had them, alot of the mid 70's fords had them, broncos also. The only difference to tell them apart is the 205 case has 3 bolts holding a plate on the case, it is right in the middle of the case and holds the idler gear between the main gears. where are you located?, around here there are alot of junkyards with them.
Actually anoter transfer case would not be cheaper. Just convert it to part-time and be done with it. The 203 is not that bad of a transfer case. The outpur shafts on the tranny are different from a 205 to a 203. Hopefully that $254 includes the hubs. I think that I bought just the part time kit without hubs for somewhere around $75 to $100. Been a while since I done it. Give Summit Racing a call, they will have what you need.
I just called Summit and they only have locking hubs - no other kits for the transfer case itself. Installing the locking hubs by themselves doesn't seem to offer much of an advantage in terms of power and mpg if I'm still turning the front differential.
What are in the kits listed by Milemarker in my earlier post or posted by 79PullingFord that convert the transfer case itself to part time (besides the locking hubs)?
I have a 1976 f250 that had the full time np 203 I went to auto zone here in AZ and they order it for me from mile marker 289.00 dollars that was the input shaft and hubs from mile marker. the conversion gear is not a good way to go, It is a weak deal. Have had the input shaft and hubs in for about 8 months and no problems. and where do you find np 205 for 50. to a 100. dollars not out here in AZ or any where else that I have found
cheapest i have seen a 205 is 250 bucks. i have the part time kit, and abuse my truck off-road haven't had any problems so far. the 203 it acually a pretty good t-case, with a lower gear low range. and not as weak as people think. but when i do break it i will go with a 205.
I have had the kit in my truck now for about five years and have had no trouble with it at all. I am looking at the summit magazine right now and they sell the mile marker kit without hubs for 39.99 P/N MMK-501 and the kit with hubs for 95.99 P/N MMK-502. The y also sell Superwinch kits and they are about the same price. The P/n for the kit with hubs is SPW-900802 and without is SPW-900801. Also, not to try to get things stirred up, but what is so week about this conversion kit. The one I have seemed pretty stout to me. Just curious to see if I was missing something.
They are pretty cheap around here, The local junkyard will sell them to me for 75 bucks, and thats about what I sell them for when I get them. A friend of mine put a 205 in place of a 203 with no problems.
