my rear needs help

hey
i have an 83 f-100 short bed stepside with a 3.8 v6. when im running at like 45mph my tach reads almost 2k i think its my gearing. i need to change it what im asking is if anyone would know the rear gear ratio? and what i should change it to so my engine isnt screaming all the time? HELP!!!!!!!!!!

A wild guess would probably be 3.55 or so. To lower rpm's you want numerically lower gears, ie 3.08. Post the axle code from the door sticker and these guys say they'll decode it.

it could be 3.08, 3.55, 3.73 etc post your axle code and we will tell you for sure. You can remedy this 2 ways; first is what you are thinking re-gearing and going to a lower (numerically) set of gears....or 2, just get bigger tires...makes more sense good excuse huh? hehe
