Engine valley freeze plug removal?

The engine valley freeze plug on my current project is pretty well pitted. Bad enough that I ordered a new one from riffraff. Are there any tips or tricks to removing the old one and reinstalling the new one?? What about retaining compound? Thanks guys.

If it's what I think it is, I'm thinking you could drill a small hole in it and install a sheet metal screw and pry it out with a crow bar or something like it. I don't know what to say about steel filings making it in though, I think that should be a concern.

Maybe I should just leave it alone?

Why? Yes, leave it alone.

If you must change it,don't drill!!!
Just tap it with a punch in other side of the plug,it will flip and you can take it with a pliers.

100% this. It’s terrifying, but there is no possible way to drill without putting metal shavings in the engine. Tap one side and the plug will rotate in the hole making removal easy.

Now that I’m thinking about it, I wonder what method @PriusLover used to remove this plug?

I really dont wanna jack with it now lol. My luck, I'll knock that thing clean through. It wasn't horribly pitted, just slightly more than I am used to seeing. I wire wheeled it and hit it with several coats of paint. I'll prolly be ok if I leave it

If I were in your position staring down into the valley at the freeze plug, I would leave it as well. Especially considering you now have it cleaned up and covered with resilient and heavy paint that will protect it from contaminants. Even then, the contaminants would not be a threat to the freeze plug any longer as you are a person that takes care of their truck and possible mechanical issues.

Consider how many "rode hard and put up wet" trucks are out there and how many times have you read about a valley freeze plug failing?

Rest easy sir, you have done well.

Did it the same way you recommend above. As soon as it had rotated, I clamped on some small vicegrips and pulled it out. Pictures of the process in my turbo thread somewhere.
