I would let the machine shop do it. They have done it several times before and don't charge much at all. Loosing a freeze plug in the middle of nowhere is bad.

What if I only need to replace 1? It just drips a bit.

You should think about a rebuild or are at least go through the engine in the near future . If you are having problems with one freeze plug chances are you are going to have more trouble !
To answer your question what ya need to do its use a screw driver and a hammer and tap the plug so that it rotates out , allowing you to remove it with a pair of pliers . Use common sense , IE, let gravity do it's job and dont let the pug fall into the block (not fun to remove, it can be done but is alot easyer with the engine out of the car/truck) When you install the new one(s) use a socket, that barly fits into the plug and a extension and Gently hammer it back in ..I would put some rtv around the plug before you install it but dont be overzealious as the rtv my act like grease and cause it(the plug) to pop in the engine block ..have fun and do your self a favor and change all of the plugs !

I wouldn't let a leaky freeze plug convince me to rebuild Chas. It is very possibly that the engine is in excellent condition and he just had a freeze plug go bad. I have seen freeze plugs go bad on a few somewhat fresh engines.

Ratsmoker I agree with you but the way I see it you might as well at least yank the motor out and reseal it , new gaskets and such .

I agree with ratsmoker. Just replace the freeze plug. Did that to my 400 6 years ago and it's still goin' strong. Valve seals leak a bit, but that's another story.
If you take a punch to one side and drive it in, the other side should rotate out. Even if it falls in, it won't go far. The plugs are at the bottom of the water jacket. Just get it back to the hole and grab it with a vise-grip pliers.
While you have the block drained, poke around the other plugs to make sure they are all good. It's easier to do 2 or 3 at one time than at 1 or 2 times later.
Hope this helps.

Great advice all!!! I would have to say I agree with ratsmoker on this one, But I will say that I am rebuilding this motor anyway. Finaly time for a 390. I just happen to have a leaky frost plug and have only had to put 1 in before(and it popped out on its own).
