Spark Plug gap question

I just put a HEI distributor in my 5.0 and i talked to a guy in my auto shop and he said that my gap should be gapped to about .044 or .045 compared to the original .035 i was just wondering if this sounds right before i go do it and have to do it over if its not

Could the gap difference cause pinging since its not gapped enough?

The timing is set at 6d

I use 91 Oct

and have all new everything

I get pinging when I punch it from a stop ive noticed it more lately and im guessing it from the gap?

Is the heat range the same? Most electronic ignition units from ford put the plug gap at .044 so your okay there. Was the distributor set up for your engine specs, I know with some distributors as yours the company will actually set it up for your application? I would guess not looking that your pinging is more related to the distributor advance more so than the plugs. Just double check your timing is at 6BTDC or so and that the timing marks are correct on the damper in relation the tdc point of your pistons. Hope this helps some, later
