That intake is definitely pulling in air from all around it including the warm air from the engine. The fact that you think this is getting more cool air than the stock system shows you really have no understanding of the basics of thermodynamics. Sure it looks pretty but you're definitely not going to get better results. Also those k&n type filters are known to allow more debris in. Also make sure you follow the cleaning procedure correctly and do it often. Most people that put these type of filters on don't maintain them properly.
Maybe checkout the Banks series of videos called "killing a duramax". In there he gives a lot of science in layman's terms about the importance of air intake on a turbo diesel engine.
