I'm looking to buy a '97 F350 7.3l, 134k miles. It's automatic but transmission went bad and has been removed. I have a '90 E350 7.3l automatic and thinking using that transmission in the F350. I believe both have the E40D transmission. I know the 7.3 configuration in the E series van has some differences compared to the F series (engine mounts, accessory locations, etc), but what about the transmission? Easy swap or no? Thanks in advance.
There are some internal differences between those years. There are also solenoid/electrical differences that will prevent the early trans from working in your later truck. You might be able to swap solenoid packs and sensors from the later trans into the early trans to get it to work. However, I'm not an E4OD/4R100 expert so take all that with a grain of salt...

Ok, figured that it might not be as simple as I was hoping. Thanks for the input.
Yes, it is a pretty simple swap, but not a direct bolt in.
The torque converters are different. The '97 has six studs, the '90 has four. The solenoid bodies are different need to be swapped. The range sensor (The sensor on the driver's side of the trans) is also different and needs to be swapped.
The other problem is that the internals of the '90 are not as strong as those in the '97.
Good to know. Probably doesn't make sense to do the swap since I'd want it for towing and wouldn't want to "downgrade". What year model transmissions will work with the '97 7.3?

what went bad in your 97? Did it flat wear out, a critical thing failed, cooling lines plugged and things got toasty quick, you left it sit in reverse or just used reverse too long, no third brake light bulb and burnt up the torque converter because of it, etc
if your wear isnt like everything is ****ed you maybe have parts you could use or a trade that someone else may want to take advantage of.
i would say get a 4r100 and do the required work to swap it in if you are looking for a used trans. plenty of them. just get an aftermarket controller or potentially modify your trucks current control computer(Not sure if possible) to work with 4r100 converter and etc.
'95-'95 7.3L E4OD is the only direct swap. An early '99 4R100 will work, too. The way to tell if it is an early '99 is that they didn't have a turbine speed sensor on top of the trans. If it has that sensor it is a later transmission and will need modifications to work in your truck.

he prob would want a 95 late year or 96+ e4od tho to get the best internals, i know the ford TSBs had a lot of produciton cut off indicators in 1995 model year for improvements esp for psd trucks
Good deal. I bought the F350 for the engine and dump bed. PO removed transmission for some reason after it went bad. Just thinking about options and whether or not it makes sense to put the truck back on the road or part it out. Thanks

so the truck is a Cab and chassis or just large f350 truck with no bed, presumably no bumper, no trans, no engine, but good otherwise? It almost sounds like a good candidate for someone with a deer total but still have their engine, trans, but need a cab and frame not tweaked to hell
