I’m considering an IDI engine swap into my 1988 F350 w/ the 351 Windsor/ZF 542 5 spd OD. The donor is a 1990 E350 van w/7.3 and E40D automatic. A couple of questions:
1. Would the engine swap be similar to having the donor be an F350 7.3 (engine mount mods, etc)?
2. Would the wide ratio ZF 542 that’s in the F350 be a good match? Or is it feasible to keep the E350’s E40D with the 7.3 and do a complete drivetrain swap out ( I prefer keeping the ZF for towing purposes)?
Ok, that is probably right. I had seen a comment that the 542 behind a gas engine wasn't as stout as a 542 coupled to the 7.3, so don't interchange them. But perhaps its more of a big block/small block pattern issue which in turn leads to a heftier casting for big blocks (not sure about the internals, though, other than the different ratios).
the 352 5 speed will not work on a diesel .
and the van engine will have a few differences from the pickup engine.
the van will not have very many parts needed to do the swap.
you would be better looking for a pickup to use as a donor
