The ICM can fail multiple different ways.. sometimes not even generating codes and it won't necessarilly prevent the motor from running. A pip failure usually results in a no start condition and a code for no PIP signal.

Thanks,
Conanski (or anyone else) would you happen to know if, when the pip fails does the vehicle act as if its a air or fuel issue? Or does it just crank and not even try to start? like the ICM does when it fails.
The PIP signal originates in the distributor from the hall effect sensor, without that signal the motor will not even attempt to fire. The ICM passes that signal along to the ignition coil with commands from the PCM to alter the timing of those pulses. Most ICM failures are partial where the signal is inconsistent(engine misses) or it falls apart at higher rpms(engine won't rev) or it can be heat related where it works fine when cold but shuts off like a light switch once it reaches a certain temperature, only to work fine again if allowed to cool off. It can also fail completely and never come back of course but that was more the exception in my experience. However now that these electronic modules are manufactured offshore it seems quality has seriously gone downhill and many are DOA or have a lifespan of minutes or days before completely failing.
