Ignition pickup/control module question.

I got a #14 DTC out of my 1988 ranger, 2.3. It decodes as "Ignition pickup was erratic." Is the source of this problem more likely the pickup itself, or the control module? Sorry if this question has been asked before.

Thanks,
Dom

Ignition pickup/control module question.

Although I have no direct experience with that particular engine, let me tell what I have learned from the wonderful world of electrical engineering. If that sensor is a "hall effect" type sensor, then it should be very reliable. If it fails, it's usually because there was a problem with the wiring or connectors or because the components that read the signal from the sensor failed. That being said, I wouldn't go out and buy a new module before verifying the problem because it sounds like it could be an expensive part. Don't know if that helps.
