So I have this 1981 F250 Regular Cab I'm restoring, and it's developed an odd problem. I just took the door inside trim panels off and I swear I didn't bump anything. They were barely held on as it is, all I had to do was remove the window handles. But suddenly now the doors auto-lock when closed. Which is not only annoying but also a problem because I don't have a door key!
I've ordered some replacement door lock cylinders but in the meantime I'm really puzzled. I would swear up and down I did nothing to disturb the mechanism. But suddenly now the door is auto-locking every time I close it and to make it weirder, it ONLY does this when the window is UP. If the window is down it's fine.
The best I can figure is somehow the latch mechanism has something wrong with it to begin with, and with the window down, the window gets in the way of whatever is going wrong. I'm starting to poke around the latch mechanism to try to understand it but figured I'd post here as well in case one of you knows what's up right off the bat. Thanks.
The truck should have the sliding locks in the door panels and if you pulled them off you had to mess with them.
FYI no one makes the slider part or the latch fir them so yiu would need to change over to the push / pull type latch and to do that you need to drill a hold in the door frame & panels or get later panels.
I don't have the slider parts but mine don't auto lock when I close them.
