Hello again.
I grabbed a Ford 9" housing from a local wrecker off a 2wd f100 1970 model. I am going to go 31 spline with a new third member and housing so I can just buy it completed and drop it in. My question is this, what are the stock axle lengths for our trucks?
thank you!!
I can’t say on the 67-72, but my 9” out of my 1977 4x4, were 31 spline and just under 32”. I ordered a set of 31 splines from Wild Horses 4x4 to replace the originals with some spline twist. Contemplating putting the original LSD and 31 splines in my 68 F100 with open 28 spline.
Bump axles are shorter than dent axles because the rear track is narrower than the front. The dent track is even front and rear. Here is how to measure for axles from the 9" experts, Currie: https://www.currieenterprises.com/me...m-9-inch-axles
Thanks for that info Rich. I knew the trucks shared a fair bit in common, didn’t know that wasn’t one of them. Looks like if I go that route, I’ll need new axles either way. Not that the warmed up 240 will utilize it, but I’ve already got the LSD carrier out of my 77 I replaced with a Truetrac
1968/72 F100 4X2 open diff was axle parts list #91. In that parts list is axle part number C8TZ4234A for a 9". Which measured 29 15/16" from hub side of axle flange to the end and 28 spline. The 31 spline axle was part number C8TZ4234B. Which measured 29 13/16". But this was noted as fitting a 9 3/8" R/G.
1968/72 F100 4X2 9" locking diff was parts list #181 depending on the tag number. Which also listed the C8TZ4234A.
1968/72 F100 4X2 locking diff was axle parts list #182 also depending on tag number. In that parts axle part number D0TZ4234A is listed. Which measured 29 51/64". But this rear axle is noted as having a higher axle capacity than normal 9". Ford didn't specify, but I assume this is also a 9 3/8" R/G.
