SOLVED: Weird starter noise?

Attached is a video of the noise it is towards the end right before the truck starts. Kind of like a screech. I suspect maybe a bad starter?

It is a bit difficult to hear, but your primary suspect of the starter would also be my primary suspect. Perhaps the bendix or the spring is on it's way out the door and just telling you audibly that it is doing so.

There are several starter choices if that is your desired route going forward. In addition to some other choices out there that are considered above "parts store labels", but I cannot recall their names at this time.

I took the links below from the 7.3L PSD Tech Folder.

Starter

From your video, it sounds like weak battery's, bad connectors, or a bad battery, it sure crancked slow.
As for the "screech" could be the engine over spinning the speed of the starter and that why you hear it screech.

For me that sounds weak.
Battery health?
Cable and connections?
Starter maybe on its way out.

Start with a voltage test on the batteries after it has been sitting for about an hour is my thought. Voltage at the batteries will not tell the entire story but it is a good test. Test at each battery they should read identical. If different the crossover or grounds are not doing their job. Voltage when resting should be right at 12.7 if you have standard lead acid or sealed lead acid (non AGM).

I agree 100% that it sounds very weak. Batteries are relatively new so I just thought a bad starter. But I agree with you guys I’m going to go back to the basics and start with the simple stuff. Battery and connections. I was looking into putting a 6.7 starter in it and maybe I am just finding an excuse to say the starter is bad and go ahead and do it? LOL…I’m a “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” kind of guy…

will report back with the state of my battery health and connections.

It is really quite easy to check the serviceability of a positive or negative cable using a multimeter and ohms value for resistance. This takes the guess work out of "are my cables good?"

Connections and terminals are easier to see as they are normally bare metal/lead alloy. A good cleaning and some corrosion resistant grease is a good idea. I remember when I was fortifying my main cables, the engine ground connections were in need of attention after 15 years of working hard for a living.

If you find you need new cabling, you can go with a "plug and play" method like FordTruckNoob recommended here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post20171033

If you are a DIY'r and want to build your own cabling, there are many threads out there with details on doing this, here is mine: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...light=positive

Keep us updated and we look forward to your updates.

Check your starter bolts before you do anything! Mine was very similar sounding to yours and I found one of the two bolts was only finger tight. I tightened it up and its back to sounding normal again. That's a freebee before you start throwing money around.

Just an update the problem is now SOLVED!
The solution was replacing the starter with a genuine Denso high torque starter from CNC. Never been more pleased with the way my truck starts. I started having solenoid issues with the same starter in the original post. Here’s the thread regarding that.

Outstanding news!

Thank you for circling back and closing the loop.

That Denso is a nice starter.

I try to always reply what solves the problem. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked up old threads that never end up having the solution so I try to help everybody out for future reference.

As for the Denso starter I watched several videos on it but they really don’t do it justice. In person it is CRAZY fast! Worth every penny. I like peace of mind, too.
