A big reason I like knowing when I'm in a regen is so I don't shut the motor off in the middle of one. Remember, EGT's are 1000 plus and shutting down the motor immediately when things are that hot is not good in the long term.
Me too, so I stuck one of these in. If the truck is doing regeneration, it will say "ON", and I know to let the truck run and do its thing. As a bonus you can add other stuff to display like outside air temp, EGTs ect.
why will the truck not go into a regen when pulling a heavy trailer?
there are lots of folks that travel in excess of over 500 miles while pulling a trailer.
Because the truck is under enough load and stays hot so the filter does not become clogged up as it will just driving around with no load on the engine.
My truck will regen about every 400 miles while pulling my 12,000 lb 5th wheel trailer. I figure with more fuel through the system it needs to regen more often than the usual 500 miles. With not pulling a very heavy trailer, I don’t heat the DPF up enough to burn off the particulates without a regen. I do find that I get a more complete cleaning (usually down to 0%) while towing.
I had my dealer add the DPF screen early on, and it helps me to make sure I get the best cleaning by driving instead of shutting down the truck by not knowing it is in a regen. I will sometimes drive extra miles just to complete a regen.
I also know when a regen happens via a older ScanGauge II that I used in my previous F150. I also monitor water temperature, voltage, and EGT temperature with that.
Just finished pulling the 5th wheel (16k) from CO to NV had 2 regens during this trip. I guess I need more load so it doesn't need to regen while towing.
