Regen…. When?

‘22 Platinum 6.7
From what I read in the manual, the system will automatically re-GEN, is this correct? How do I know when its doing it? Is there a light on the dash?

Nope no light that I have seen. I look at the maintenance section and look at how full the filter is. When I notice it around 95% I drive a little longer to have it do a regen.

The computer takes care of it for the most part. A lot depends on how you drive. I do a lot of short trips for the most part. Every time I have looked it has been at a different %. I figure the computer is doing what needs to be done.

where are you seeing a regen percentage? I am under the “truck info” tab and then to “maintenance” but the only options I have are engine air, oil, DEF gauge, and tire pressure.
the def gauge is just a distance to empty gauge. Thanks in advance

You forgot to mention to the OP (who may not know) that the DPF% screen does not come enabled in the truck by default.

The dealer can enable it or it can be done through ForScan.

The presumption is that Ford doesn't alert or give any indication to the driver that a regen is happening because the driver doesn't need to know. There are certain circumstances that could lead to a "drive to clean" message, but I wouldn't expect most people's driving habits to initiate that.

I use the DPF% screen to help anticipate when a regen is coming, or active. Then if possible, I can try to drive until complete. Necessary? Probably not. Another way that some determine if a regen active is by watching the instant MPG screen. Apparently it drops considerably during regen.

Really need that Regen screen activated. I didn’t learn about it until the particulate filter was clogged up. Happened on vacation and $6300 bill for new filter that’s not covered by extended warranty. Apparently, the truck will not regen while pulling a heavy trailer which was what I was doing. Have to be driving faster than 35 mph for 20-30 minutes after the filter is full before it’ll regen.

why will the truck not go into a regen when pulling a heavy trailer?
there are lots of folks that travel in excess of over 500 miles while pulling a trailer.

Once many parameters are met (such as exhaust gas pressure) that an active regeneration is required, the PCM will absolutely command an active regeneration when towing. However, the higher the EGTs from towing depending on engine load, the more soot will burn off from "passive regeneration" > 572°F on EGT13 which can certainly extend the mileage between active regenerations.

The truck will regen while towing a trailer if it's parameters are met. I tow a 16k 5th wheel and have seen it many times regen while towing and not towing.

A big reason I like knowing when I'm in a regen is so I don't shut the motor off in the middle of one. Remember, EGT's are 1000 plus and shutting down the motor immediately when things are that hot is not good in the long term.

Yep, that’s why I’d like a Regen indicator.

Oddly enough, I think the OCR option is only available on XL’s and XLT’s when ordering. However, you can enable it on all of them with Forscan, for free (minus the cost of the cable). I didn’t order my 22 XLT with the ($250) OCR option, but I enabled both the DPF% screen and the Auto-Regen option once I got it. I leave Auto-Regen disabled and keep an eye on the DPF%. Once it hits 100% I will enable auto-regen and make a longer drive to let it regen or I can park it in the driveway and let it go through a regen. Also, with Forscan you can force a manual regen anytime you want (sitting in the driveway). Leaving auto-regen disabled works out better for me though as all of my driving is short trips so I wouldn’t typically drive enough to let a regen complete. Also, both times I have seen my truck in regen has been while driving at least 70 down the highway. Both times the only way to tell was to watch the mpg gauge drop, or watch the DPF% drop. There was no change in engine noise or elevation in RPMs. In my opinion it should be standard on all Diesel engines.
