Hello everybody, I have a 93 E-350 with the diesel engine. It seems the driver side battery is a size 65, and the passenger side is a size 50...a longer/narrower battery with only 650 CCA vs 850 for the 65. This seems stupid to me, as my F-250's and F-350 all have identical batteries on both sides, with the same engine. This is cemented by the fact that I have to replace the little 50 battery every couple of years because it has to work harder than the opposite battery. Does anybody have the same issue, or found a solution?
That era of diesel van had two different battery sizes. Maybe you could adapt a frame mount for the second one, or fit a larger one in place of the 50? A trip to a sympathetic parts store would probably allow you tho opportunity to drop a bigger battery in to see. You could start with the 65 you already have. There is a reason a smaller size is specified, I personally would want to identify that so as to not have something unfortunate happen. Folks have installed larger batteries that proceeded to short out against the hood once it was shut.
Thank you for the reply. From what I can tell, there's no room for a bigger battery in this location due to the size of the battery tray, the location of the A/C blower, and as you said, it really can't be taller because of the hood, although it should be non conductive as it's fiberglass. The battery tray could be modded, but the only option would be to put in a longer battery, of which I don't know if it exists. (Loved the battery humor by the way 😁
That's an interesting thread! My rig has two forward compartments right against the cab...I already have 2 BIG deep cycle batteries in one of them for my 5K watt inverter that I keep separate from the truck's electrical system, and I have a shoreline that I plug the truck in every night when I come in from work, that recharges them overnight. I guess I could route my cables into that other compartment and relocate my truck batteries there... That's a lot of cable though 😳. maybe tie in the two deep cycle batteries with an auxiliary switch somehow for backup power? Oh man, now you got my wheels turnin...
I think with good cable, you would benefit from having both engine batteries there. Easier to service, provide balance to other side house batteries. Road tractors have their batteries several feet away from the engine; it is not a problem with appropriately sized cables. You could run 31 series even. Probably cheaper than factory sizes, get studded and no lead terminals to worry about.
An H9/group 49 battery is long yet with a low profile. The terminals are reversed compared to most others so you might have to rework the cables. Available in AGM since it’s a common European size.
