I’m not seeing anything worth fixing, it’s a truck they get beat up.
To be honest I don’t either. You’re perfectly within your rights to file insurance, sue, whatever. But it wouldn’t bother me. I’m just not going to be that concerned over a truck.
The "kid" was driving so the "kid" has insurance. Talk to him and get it fixed. I don't understand why there was any mention of getting the father involved.
Well, if the kids father is a stand up guy, you shouldn’t even have to ask.
If he isn’t, I would try a dent guy first. If not up to new, then it’s a question you will have to ask yourself. Is the friendship worth it?
Luckily, it’s not body damage. .
I’ve been in the situation. Cost me $1300 but it was the right thing to do. Everybody was happy.

Well, me too. My teen driver hit a car in a parking lot (and it was NOT a new car LOL), and I insisted on paying for the damage. It was a very minor scuff, but costs me a grand…..
How do you know the kid did it? And does he know he did it? If he does, he should have come to you already. Beyond those questions, I'm with George in his first response.
Ultimately, the chrome bumper should allow a number of good repair options without any need for body work or paint matching.
I've owned trucks for decades, put them through rigorous use, and have no problem keeping them nice and dent-free.
I re-ended a “friend” when I was 17. My parents got a call from his insurance 1 hour later… he claimed injury, somehow a broken custom stereo, and other things. Never even told me he was going through insurance, let alone given me the chance to pay for the dent to the trunk lid… all the other stuff was BS. So yeah giving the kid a quote for repairs is standup and doing more than most.
If you look around at on line for sale adds thrre are a lot of new take off bumpers, often under $500.
split two (or three?) ways it wouldn't be too bad.
the bumpers a a little thin for conventional paintless dent removal, but I have done a few bumpers now that are worse than that that came out perfect, or good enough no one else will notice.
If you take the word kid and add anyone of the following....
Wife
Mother
Pastor
Best friend
The answer would be the same as the neighbors kid. A complete stranger or someone who is a jerk.....I would be going after. Btw:. My wife added my Texas pin stripes going down a two tracker getting up to high rock Bay. I love her for it.
You could look at a shiny, perfect bumper and recall the time you won a victory.
You could look at a couple of dings and recall the time you learned forgiveness.
Sooner or later I hit a deer with everything I have ever owned. Just be patient.
I recently bought a Ranch Hand bumper and when I went to pick it up there were hundreds, maybe thousands of factory bumpers laying in the field next to the warehouse. That would maybe be an idea of where to get
a replacement bumper.
I would tell the kid to buy you a new bumper, and you then can give him the dented one off your truck for him to sell to recoup some of the replacement cost.
Second option dent guy, but they aren't really that cheap either if they are good. Either option i would be looking for the "kid" who has a license to make it right or at least pay a pretty good portion of it depending on how well you know them. I would certainly go that route before turning it in to the insurance company, if the kid or parent has any brains they would know how much the rates are going to climb if the kid has an accident on his record.
All i can say is my kid is 17 with a license, if he hit one of my friends trucks in the driveway and did similar damage he would either either be paying to get it fixed, or be searching the internet for a good used bumper to give the guy to make it right.
