last year, replaced multifunction switch , all flashers running great
we are on a roadtrip , left my service manuals at home 😟
this morning ,no more flashers at all neither emergency or regular ones
fuse no 5 ok
no sound from the flasher relay ( no 12v either at any relay terminals )
I don't have any diagrams for 1996, but I do for a 1998 van I have. It shows fuse number differences. What is probably the same is the wiring to the multifunction switch. There are two fuses supplying power, it looks like one for stop/hazard and one for turn. Same flasher for both. These fuses, in 98, are 7 (10A) and 11 (15A) in the foot panel fuse box. These two circuits share much in common, basically everything except between the multi switch and these two fuses. Because of how the hazard switch is wired, the most likely candidates for 98 (and maybe 96???) would be the multi switch, the flasher, or the two fuses. There would have to be a lot of wiring damage to have happened suddenly for this to be a wiring issue. The flasher has its own ground but generally would come on and stay on without ground. Not sure about a solid state one.

Hope you already back on the road.
finally problem fixed , all the parts involved ( fuses , connectors are ok) but when I strated to remove the plastic covers I had access to the multifunction switch , removed it ,
nothing to loose , I cleaned the terminals and reconnect it tight , all works 🤗 , so yess it can be that simple
