hoping someone can help with some wiring advice.
im wiring my 56, using a 12 circuit fuse panel and having problems getting the tail light / brake light/ signal light work properly.
Using new ford tail lights with 1157 bulbs, the problem is - with right or left signal flashing when I apply brake light- they stop flashing, I have tried a 2-3 tail light adapter from CURT but no difference.
I'm using a ford steering column from a 68 LTD,
I have swapped and tried every wire Combination I can think of.
I have the flasher to the steering column signal selector, out to left and right, then add the brake wire and lights stop flashing.
seems like there’s something I’m overlooking???
relays??? Or diode’s???
I am not sure i completely understood what you said but I wont let that get in my way.
With the '68 column (and most others) the brake light switched circuit comes into the turn signal switch and then out to the brake lights.
I am using a 63 Ford Galaxy steering column in my 51 F1 and Oldf1 is right - the brake light power goes in to the turn signal switch which feeds to the brake lamps. The turn signals are powered separately and feed from the flasher unit to the turn signal switch. The turn signal switch operates both turn signals and brake lamps.
So, basically, the turn signal switch tells the lights what to do. Make sure that the turn signal switch is working properly. If you have a connector between the t/signal switch and the wire harness, disconnect it and use jumper wires to power up the brake light feed and t/signal power wires at the switch and see if the t/signals work properly then apply the brakes to verify that the t/signals work properly with the brake lights on.
If they work properly, then your problem is between the switch and the lights in the rear. First check your grounds to make sure there is no feedback. Your lights in the rear will need one wire from the turnsignal switch for each side to operate the turn signals and brake lights. You will need a ground wire for each rear light and a tail light wire from the headlight switch.
I suspect a bad ground or maybe it could be a bad turn signal switch..
I was using a multi meter to track the line Continuity, It never occurred to the brake light would feed into the steering column, followed these instructions and bingo lights work, signals work, tail lights work, 4 way flasher work.
my steering column is from. 68 Ford LTD.
thanks for the help guys.
