A bearing is a real possibility but normally they knock and clatter not scrap like that. if it's totally out of oil I can see that happening though. can't rule it out.
And a bearing shouldn't make it smoke or run like crap, a wasted piston will. either way its bad m'kay.

Well I just checked the oil level it was a quart low almost.
No metallic sheen or milkshake so that's good at least it'll be the weekend before I can do a full compression test. What size main bearings do I need I've seen 0.010 or standard. Could I get away with just trying a new harmonic balancer and an oil change?? I know what motor knock sounds like and I don't really hear it on this engine. I know it has flat tappets and I can't verify what oil was used when this engine was rebuilt.
your bearing size depends on what the crank was turned, if it was turned. you won't know until you get in there.
The knock doesn't mean as much to me as the scraping , if you can't find an external explanation for it that's the deal breaker. a bad piston or two won't show too bad in the oil for a while. and while you need a high zinc oil I question if that has anything to do with your current situation .
Given the fact you badly overheated it, or so it seems, I would focus my suspicions on that. heat alone can be a killer but if the holes they bored in your rebuild was a bit on the tight side what you may normally get away with might be a killer under these circumstances. I would do a compression check before I did much else .
Badly overheated.. bad smoke...slapping noise with horrible scraping sound... runs like crap. if that's what actually what we're dealing with it's not likely to end well .
While nothing is impossible, the fact is it runs like crap, makes awful noises and smokes bad according to the op. and all this started after being badly overheated . the chances a bolt or two worked lose at this very moment are remote, and even if they did it wouldn't resolve anything other than the noise so the only logical conclusion is it's all related.

Sounds like I'm going to be doing that 4Bt swap after all.
the engine you have was a POS when it was new so a swap to most anything would be an upgrade. I'd do a 460 myself I own the little Cummins engines in equipment and they're no powerhouse.
I wouldn't give up until you do a compression test, but from what I can see your chances of saving this engine are slim to none so considering options is reasonable.
I'm not looking for any major gains with it. It's just an occasional driver not going to be pulling an trailers or hauling any heavy loads or anything like that. So that's fine w me. I suggested the 4bt bc it's drop in. I've also heard of people doing the Isuzu 3.9l 4btd also.
But all I'm finding is builds on 4x4 manuals and mines a 2wd auto and I'd like to keep it auto, I've had my share of manuals.
I also work as a diesel tech, so that's a plus lol

2wd is very doable with an auto, they make a adaper for the c6 or just use a 727 trans that came factory on the 4bt and 6bt
