I am in Kansas and on a road-trip to Washington home. My 92, F150, 4.9, 4x4, auto is dripping tranny fluid from what appears to be front seal (bell housing) at a rate of 1/4 quart per 150 miles or a week. I am broke. Seriously. So I added tranny stop leak 1/2 small bottle and it has slowed. She does NOT slip and it has an after market trans cooler. My question, besides the $1500-$3000 repair IS- can I maintain fluid and safely get home? 2000 miles across the plains in winter. Flame away I don’t care- please though if you have experience with these E4 ODs please advise. Thanks. Respectfully, Cap.
If you are sure on the fluid shortage and the number of miles you get per 1/4 qt. If it were mine I would check fluid and drive 50 miles and recheck. If you are ok on the stick go another 50 miles and recheck. Go another 50 and recheck again. If it is consistent at 1/4 qt low at the end on 150 miles then I would go another 100 and recheck. I would check about every 100 miles to be safe. I don't know of any other way to try and help you except to say take it easy and you can't check fluid to often. Good Luck
Maybe someone else will chime in and offer more.
Totally agree with Sandymane, check it, put some lucus trans stop leak in it, it is supposed to recondition the seals, and allow them to kind of swell up and slow or even stop a leak, when you go to fill with trans fluid, each time you check if it needs any, just use the lucus until its all gone.
