I have a 95 351cid Bronco w/ E4OD tranny and upon pulling into the in-laws drive way i saw a long streak of fluid on the road - the leak was still dripping from the rubber plug under the tranny. The next morning I drove it a few miles over to Aamco (Rockville MD) (being out of town I didnt have any knowledge of a better choice -other than Ford dealer) - They took a look at it and claimed no fluid left in the tranny other than what was left in the sump which was brown and thus signalled to them some damage to fiber parts. (Fluid had been change 11,000 miles earlier with a flush job). I had to get back to Houston so I flew out and am waiting to hear from Aamco on the extent of the repairs - intially they said min $1800 for swapping out all fiber parts or as high as $3000 to swap out entire tranny. The thing still ran fine when I drove it to Aamco and did NOT leak - they said because it was out of fluid. Not sure which way to go on this. Also curious if I should ask about any codes captured by the computer related to the tranny issue.

Most E4OD tranny codes will be 600 series codes on three-digit EEC's If you had that much fluid pouring out the inspection plug in the bell housing below the torque converter, you either lost the TC seal or the pump. Either way, there IS internal damage. It takes only a couple of minutes of driving without hydraulic pressure in the tranny to eat the innards of the TC and send the aluminum shards dumping through the main casing.
The question I would pose though in this situation is "Will the tranny still engage now that the truck has been shut down?" Yes the truck will still move without fluid it it IF the torque converter had reached full lock-up BEFORE the fluid/pressure loss. My 92 blew the pump in the middle of a long grade on I-44. I kept the hammer down and ran another 30 miles til I was inside Springfield MO city limits with a Ford dealer at the bottom of the ramp. It wouldn't downshift climbing hills and it was dumping fluid like a bad habit BUT since the TC was in full lock-up, the tranny remained engaged until I brought it to a full stop. Once I did, she wasn't going anywhere.
That sound like your torq drain plug might not have been tightened and came off. Or the seal for your torq is damaged. Anyway you look at it, if the fluid ran real low or dry then the tranny will need a rebuild. Did you put fluid in before you went to Aamco? I would think so. Also you stated that it didn't leak on the way over to Aamco?
