My F150 w/E40D tranny has 90k miles and I'm about to have it serviced, but the maintenance schedule that came w/ the truck does not indicate when the tranny fluid should be replaced. There are intervals for tranny fluid replacement but with notations excluding the C6 and E40D trannys in these intervals. Does anyone out there with the E40D tranny know the correct mileage when the fluid should be replaced. Thanks in advance.
The general rule is 30k for the earlier versions. I go by how the fluid looks and smells. If it's burnt I recommend replacing it ASAP, but if it looks good, I wouldnt' worry to soon.
Yeah, 30K is a good round number for routine ATF replacement, but... if you tow or run in dirty, hot or stop and go conditions you should probably go for 12K. My 94 F250 4x4 460 E4OD owners manual recommends changes at 12K for this type work. I think it recommends 50K for normal use.
Be sure to change the filter too.
Like the other guy said, if the color is brown or brownish pink or smells burnt, you should change ASAP, you may have trouble brewing.
"...Under normal driving conditions automatic
transmission fluid should be changed every
30,000 miles (48,000 km) or 21,000 miles
(34,000 km) if under severe duty conditions.
However, if the transmission is not working
properly, for instance, the transmission may slip
or shift slowly, or you may notice some sign of
fluid leakage, the fluid level should be checked.
****NOTE: Except E4OD transmission, there is no
30,000 mile (48,000 km) scheduled
transmission fluid change requirement.*********
Transmission fluid, filter and seal assembly
should be changed every 21,000 miles
(34,000 km) only under any of the following
conditions.
qExtended periods of high speed driving
during hot weather at/or above +90°F
(+30°C).
qTowing a trailer for distances over 1,000 miles
(1,600 km) per trip.
qAccumulating 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or more
per month.
qContinuous operation and/or extensive idling
(a delivery service as an example).
qOperating in severe dust conditions.
NOTE: Use of a transmission fluid other than
specified could result in transmission
malfunction and/or failure. Refer to
“Adding automatic transmission fluid”,
“Refill capacities” and “lubricant
specifications” for further information.
