My 1989 300 is breaking up during WOT. Just started timing it and this happened. Was happening before but it would die shortly after. I am looking at a different computer setup. These ford computers seem to keep blowing a resistor or two and jamming everything up?
With the engine at operating temperature, pull the spout out and set timing to 10degrees BTDC. This is the computer BASE TIMING. When you put the SPOUT back in, the computer takes charge of setting itself to the programs.
Sandy your 7.5L truck was an early adopter for the remote mount Ignition Control Module (ICM) module. The OP's truck is a 1989 4.9L model therefore the SPOUT is located near the distributor, where the ICM is mounted.
The small block/4.9L engine trucks did not start using the remote mount ICM until 1992.
I got the timing set and it ideals perfectly. The only issue now is the huge miss that makes the truck lurch hard between 2000 and 3000 rpm. Consistently happens in that range but will start anywhere between 2000 and 2500 rpm and go out to 3000 rmp
