1985 300 4.9 timing

1985 300 4.9 timing

truck cranks easy,seems to run smooth.getting poor gas milage,burning to rich.truck would not pass clean air test.put on reman.carb.cant get engine timed correctly by adjusting distibutor.this is a rebuilt engine.4000 miles on motor.oil is very black after only a few hundred miles,i am sure its a timing problem ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Why doesn't turning the distributor set the timing? Does it still have the feedback carburetor on it? Is it still hooked up to the computer? Is the emissions sticker still in the engine compartment (with the vacuum diagram on it)? Did you tune the reman carb after you installed it? Who rebuilt the engine? How have you determined that it's the timing? Do you own a Haynes manual (PN 36058)?

Also, have you disconnected the spout connector when you are timing it? On my truck when I had the TFI ignition (before I converted to Duraspark II) when I would try to change the timing with the connector plugged, the computer would just reset the timing electronically to keep it at 10* when the computer was still giving me advance. (it quit giving me advance after I added header, cam and that 4bbl) It REALLY freaked me out. Also, you probably need to tune the carburator just as Steve83 suggested.
