What goes wrong with a 300 6 TFI distributor to cause it to not advance?

If your truck is a 1984 - 1986, the timing is controlled by the computer. If any sensors have been deleted, bypassed or are malfunctioning, the computer will lock the timing and cause the original "feedback" carburetor to run rich. This makes for sluggish performance and very poor gas mileage.

What if it just does and you go to buy a new one and they it has a vacuum advance?
